To Make a Fire | Sound Replacement Blog I

Updated: Jul 2, 2018

This week was our first time getting into the studio to start recording for our Carrie scene sound replacement. Our focus for today was to concentrate on making 'fire' sound effects, to be used when Carrie starts a swelling fire by messing with the lights and electrical wires, complete with an explosion of course!

Our main piece of equipment was the Sennheiser MKE600, a shotgun mic which would give us the focused range that we needed. Creating something that would actually sound like fire took a bit of experimentation - we ended up recording the Foley artist rustling a handful of analog tape, popping a sheet of bubble wrap, and softly blowing against the diaphragm of the microphone. By layering these noises, we were able to produce something that (hopefully) sounds like a large, roaring fire.

These sounds aren't mixed with the rest of our sounds yet, so hopefully when they are blended in, they sound more realistic!

We also did some work on the section when Carrie's enemy is hoisting the ropes holding the bucket of blood over Carrie's head. This part of the scene is very dramatic, there is little sound apart from close ups of the girl's hands the creak of the rope as it precariously dangles. To emanate the sound of this rope, we used an old office chair, which creaks when you lean back in it. Pretty cool, huh?
